We spoke with talented artist, Shana from Emilio Frank Design, a recent stall holder at Double Bay Dog Day 2018. We absolutely love her artwork, not only because it frequently features a gorgeous dachshund in it, but the beautiful bright colours truly pop!
Check out what she had to say!
1) What inspired you to become an artist?
Growing up in a family of artists nurtured me to become a maker and work with colour across a variety of media. I was always surrounded by handmade fibre art, ceramics, painting and craft. My business is named after my grandfathers Emil + Frank who were both talented creatives.
An extensive career in professional organising, decluttering & styling cultivated my love of interiors and the home. After further studies in colour, design & visual arts, Emilio Frank Design was established in 2015 to create artworks, homewares and textiles that bring form, function and positivity to interiors and public spaces.
My paintings, prints and patterns are created with the intention to evoke joyful memories, inspired by my passion for Mid Century design.
2) Do you have a fur-baby, if so; please tell us about him/her
We are hoping to hear the pitter patter of tiny dachshund paws in our home this year! I’ve been waiting for 40 years, so the Year of the Dog is meant to be.
3) Your artwork stood out to us, as it featured a very cute sausage dog. Tell us more about this:
My Viennese grandmother had a black + tan dachshund called Schnitzel, that I adored as a child. Our family has been crazy for sausage dogs ever since! Schnitzel was featured on my first range of tea-towels and has been so popular, I’ve expanded the range to greeting cards, mugs and more tea-towels featuring him! I hadn’t realised how many fellow dachshund lovers there were out there, and enjoy meeting new customers who tell me all about their dachshunds and show me photos. It makes my day!
3) What materials do you work with?
I work with sustainable materials and collaborate with ethically produced studios. My dachshund tea-towels are 100% cotton and screen-printed in my neighbouring suburb.
The screen printing doesn’t fade in the wash, which makes them long lasting. I endeavour to support local makers, produce items that have a long shelf life and create vibrant works to make people happy. My packaging is eco friendly and my art prints are limited edition works that are printed on museum grade giclee (with a lifespan of up to 75 years).
4) You were involved in Double Bay Dog Day 2018, how was your experience there?
I had the most wonderful time, meeting lovely people, patting the most gorgeous puppies and enjoying the community experience. Who could not be ecstatic being surrounded by all that cuteness!
5) Are you a passionate supporter of pet adoption?
Absolutely. I was so thrilled to support and promote this event, to raise awareness of pet adoption and the wonderful work that you do.
6) Where can we view more of your artwork?
My website showcases more of my portfolio and has an online shop to view my complete range of artworks and homewares. Feel free to join my tribe via my newsletter, which keeps you in the know about upcoming markets + exhibitions, new ranges or VIP exclusive offers.
